ANAPHYLAXIS AND EPIPENS

 (2 Hours)

epipenpicBook On-site training nationwide or join our open courses in Sussex & London.

Where an employer’s assessment for First Aid needs identifies that staff should be anaphylaxis aware and able to use an adrenaline auto-injector, this course provides the necessary training.

It is especially relevant to teachers, parents and carers and anyone who is responsible for, or works with those at risk of severe allergic reaction.

This training can be provided as a stand alone session to appropriate students or as an extension of our other First Aid courses.

Students are instructed in both the theory behind and the practical use of an EpiPen. Practice and assessment is carried out with the aid of an EpiPen training kit.

The Health and Safety Executive have issued the following guidance:

'Medicines legislation restricts the administration of injectable medicines. Unless self administered, they may only be administered by or in accordance with the instructions of a doctor (eg by a nurse). However, in the case of adrenaline there is an exemption to this restriction which means in an emergency, a suitably trained lay person is permitted to administer it by injection for the purpose of saving life. The use of an Epipen to treat anaphylactic shock falls into this category. Therefore, first aiders may administer an Epipen if they are dealing with a life threatening emergency in a casualty who has been prescribed and is in possession of an Epipen and where the first aider is trained to use it.'
